'Umbar' was a name—of unknown meaning—given to the area by its original inhabitants. The Númenóreans adopted the name, probably aware of the fact that 'Umbar' was the Quenya word for 'fate'. The great cape and land-locked firth of Umbar south of the Bay of Belfalas formed a natural harbour of enclosing rock, but the "great fortress of Númenor" that was located within it was not built until 2280 S.A
Like the earlier New Haven in Enedwaith, and the later Pelargir on the Anduin, Umbar became a base from which Númenórean influence spread over Middle-earth. It was at Umbar that the last king of Númenor, Ar-Pharazôn the Golden, landed in 3261 S.A, to challenge Sauron.
After the Downfall of Númenor 58 years later, Umbar remained in the hands of the Númenóreans, in essence a Realm in Exile alongside Arnor and Gondor. But unlike these others, Umbar had been used by the "King's Men", who had turned to the worship of Melkor in the last days of Númenor. These "King's Men" were not friendly to the Elves or to their fellow Númenórean survivors who were allied to the Elves, and became known as Black Númenóreans.
Gondorian possession of Umbar came to an abrupt end in 1448 T.A., but not at the hands of an external foe. Following the disastrous Kin-strife, the sons of Castamir the Usurper arrived there with many men and most of the fleet of Gondor.
These men became known as the Corsairs of Umbar, and within two centuries became a major threat to Gondor. In 1634 T.A. Castamir's great-grandsons Angamaitë and Sangahyando raided Pelargir, from Umbar, killing King Minardil. Gondor could not retaliate as it was soon after ravaged by the Great Plague. Vengeance, if not swift, was certainly devastating: 176 years after Minardil's death, his great-grand nephew succeeded in briefly recapturing Umbar.
and Throughout the rest of The Third Age, Umbar was home a new generation of 'Corsairs of Umbar', who must have been closely related to the Haradrim, if not even merely Haradrim themselves. These new Corsairs were cruel slavers who often raided the coasts of Belfalas and Anfalas in Gondor.
Umbar's fleet was largely destroyed in 2980 T.A., when Thorongil (Aragorn Elessar, as it later turned out), then in the service of the Steward of Gondor Ecthelion II led a taskforce south and burned them, killing the Captain of the Haven in the process.
During the War of the Ring, Umbar had not fully recovered from this, but could still send "fifty great ships and smaller vessels beyond count" to raid the coastlands of Gondor and draw off major forces from the defence of Minas Tirith. They were once again defeated by Aragorn, and the Dead Men of Dunharrow. With the Fall of Barad-dûr, Umbar, weakened and defeated, finally lost its sovereignty and submitted to the crown of King Elessar.Few settlers, and even Corsairs, remained in Umbar after the defeat at the hands of King Elessar and the Dead Men of Dunharrow.
Stragglers and refugees arrived at the dwindling coastal city, once the proud haven of the Corsairs. With the resources of the new kingdom tied on rebuilding the main lands and the city of Minas Tirith, Umbar soon had to struggle to stay alive. It's inhabitants, not used to farming, once again fell into piracy to provide food and comforts for their families.
It was in this era that a new captain arose to rally what few Corsairs remained and even recruiting from among the refugees, to start anew the legend of the Corsairs and to proudly carry once more into the sea the banner of the Red Sun, who at one time caused so much fear in the hearts of anyone that dared trek into her domain.
The Castamiri took with them a large part of Gondor's fleet, thus weakening Gondor and strengthening the naval traditions of Umbar. Gondor later conquered Umbar, but had lost it again soon after. The term "Corsair" originally referred to the privateers hired by the Confederate City State of Umbar to raid Gondor's coasts, but later was applied by the men of the north to Umbar in general.
(interwove story about the group here)
Umbar is an island surrounded by sea.
This island has a great diversity of terrain outside the coastal shores, where the Corsairs have their city.
Corsairs have little use for any other amenities beyond direct access to the sea, and so most of the land beyond the shores remains barely explored, and other dwelling settlements could be lurking beyond the hills. Most of the commerce comes from lands across the sea.
An overview of the land of Umbar unearths large plains, rain forests and mountain ranges, even deep underground caves where goblins have been spotted by scouting Corsair parties.
The realm of Umbar and the Black Corsairs are based on the island of Puerto Rico.
A small island amidst the Caribbean sea, it's closest neighbor is the Dominican Republic (part of the island known as Hispaniola or La Española).
When Christophorus Columbus arrived at Puerto Rico during his second voyage on November 19, 1493, the island was inhabited by a group of Arawak Indians known as Taínos. They called the island "Borikén" or, in Spanish, "Borinquen". Columbus named the island San Juan Bautista, in honor of Saint John the Baptist. Later the island took the name of Puerto Rico (Rich Port) while the capital was named San Juan. In 1508, Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León became the island's first governor to take office.
Various forts and walls were built over the centuries to protect the port of San Juan from European enemies — such as La Fortaleza, El Castillo San Felipe del Morro and El Castillo de San Cristóbal.
These forts repelled the attacks of French Corsairs and even famous "pirates" like Sir Francis Drake (he was an English privateer, but considered by the Spaniards as simply a pirate).
FRIENDSHIP.
Take care of your brothers, socialize and always try to be open and friendly. Allies, comrades, opponents, nemesis. In the end we are all brothers-in-arms and should try to behave accordingly.
CAMARADERIE.
Help your team mates in anything you can. Be the first to volunteer for any task. Protect your team and keep in mind that they, in turn, protect you.
LOYALTY.
Do not betray your brothers. 'Tis your duty to help those that are below your skill level to better themselves. Do not judge them and never speak behind one's back. You should have enough courage to always speak things face to face.
TRUST.
Individual progress in combat is always encouraged, but when facing a large number of enemies, the Corsairs fight as a unit. Every member is important and thus, important that everyone trusts that their brothers will cover your back.
lNTEGRITY.
Accept defeat on the field, take your shots and don't carry grudges around. Every match is an opportunity to learn. The Corsairs have an honor system where every fighter calls the hits they took. Never sacrifice your integrity because of the thirst for victory.
